The German-Belgian border crossing at Köpfchen, today a popular excursion meeting point and cultural center, was built in 1920 on the basis of the Treaty of Versailles. After the defeat of the German Reich in the First World War, Aachen, Eupen and Malmedy were occupied by Allied troops in December 1918. In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles stipulated that the districts of Eupen and Malmedy were to be ceded to Belgium by the German Reich. Where previously there had only been a district border between Eupen and Aachen, between neighboring towns and villages, a new border was now created while the consequences of the war were still being felt.

The new source volume in the series "Aus den Quellen des Stadtarchivs Aachen", which was produced jointly with the State Archives in Eupen, describes this process, which was accompanied by political tensions, social crises, everyday problems and pragmatic arrangements, in a scholarly introduction and on the basis of historical sources from both archives. The 59 sources are diverse. In addition to official letters, there are historical photos, plans, posters, etc., which are commented on and embedded in their historical context. The spectrum ranges, for example, from orders issued by the Belgian governor of the new Belgian territories, General Herman Baltia, to reports from the border demarcation commission and pasture applications from farmers who want to let their cattle graze on meadows that are now suddenly no longer on the territory of another district, but in another state.

The volume was awarded the 2021 Prize of the Parliament of the German-speaking Community of Belgium in the Archive and Library category.
