Practical tips

You are very welcome to visit the Aachen City Archive. We will be happy to assist you with your research. However, we would like to ask you to observe a few rules of conduct, which are set out in detail in our reading room regulations:

  • Please leave jackets, coats, umbrellas and bags in the checkroom in front of the reading room. Lockable lockers are available there free of charge (with deposit coin). The City Archive cannot accept any liability for items deposited there.
  • Please do not smoke in the rooms of the City Archive and the Nadelfabrik.
  • Please do not take any food or drink into the reading room and mute your cell phone.
  • Scanning is not permitted in the reading room
  • The reading room is open Tuesday from 13.00 - 17.00, Wednesday from 9.00 - 17.00 and Thursday from 9.00 - 13.00. During these times you can work there and use the books placed there freehand.
  • You can shorten your waiting time and simplify the presentation of archive materials and stored books by making an advance order with a fixed appointment. Pre-orders should be made at least two working days in advance if possible. Only a limited number of archive units can be retrieved per archive item order. Pre-orders can also be made in writing by e-mail to stadtarchiv@mail.aachen.de.
  • Please handle all archive materials and books with great care and attention. Drawing through, attaching notes or post-its and using the originals as a writing surface are not permitted. You can borrow book cushions and lead snakes from the advice desk to keep bound archive materials open.
  • You can order photo reproductions, scans and copies at the consultation. Any copyrights must be taken into account. Copies are only possible if the conservation condition of the original allows this. As a rule, reproductions of all kinds can only be made with a time delay. Costs are incurred for all forms of reproduction in accordance with the fee schedule. Please ask for advice in individual cases.
  • You can also take your own photographs in the reading room, provided there are no legal or conservational reasons for not doing so. The license for one opening week costs 10 euros, for students and pupils 5 euros! The use of tripods or flatbed scanners is not permitted. Please ask the reading room supervisor about the exact procedure!
  • You can help the City Archive in its work by providing the Archive Library with a copy or offprint of publications that are partly based on the analysis of archive documents!

Thank you for your understanding.
