Technical paper - history competition - presentation - term paper?

How do I prepare for a visit?

What preparations can be made at home?

  • Find and narrow down the topic, i.e. first search for relevant literature on the topic and get an initial general overview of the current state of research. We will be happy to help you find a topic and literature. Just send us an e-mail! The city library is also a good place to search for literature.
  • Contact the city archive, preferably by e-mail, and arrange a consultation if necessary.
  • The opening hours of the reading room are Tuesdays 1-5pm, Wednesdays 9am-5pm and Thursdays 9am-1pm.
  • Conduct research on the external form of the work (scope, font size, structure, list of sources and bibliography) before contacting the city archive
  • Create a timetable and observe submission deadlines! We are a research institution that receives many inquiries every day. It may take one to two weeks to respond to your request.

How is the archive used?

  • Please lock up coats, jackets, bags, umbrellas, food and drink in the checkroom!
  • On the first visit, an application form is filled out (name, address, name of the school, name of the subject teacher, subject of the work).
  • You can search for literature in our database or card catalog. We will be happy to help you. Literature from the archive library cannot be borrowed. Please make a careful note of the shelfmarks!
  • You will be presented with finding aids (overviews of archive records) to help you find the individual original sources on the subject. Please make a careful note of the shelfmarks!
  • The shelfmarks of the books and archive materials, your name and the date are noted on order slips.
  • The orders are then taken from the stacks to the reading room by a stacker.
  • If you have already received signatures from us by e-mail, please pre-order them 2-3 days before your visit by e-mail for the day of your visit, this will save you waiting time!
  • Don't forget your writing utensils!
  • Laptops may be used. Power connections are available on every table and there is freely accessible WLAN in the reading room.
  • Files may not be copied. Scans from files and original documents can be commissioned from archive staff if the state of preservation of the archive records permits. The costs for this depend on the amount of time required for processing.
  • Pages can also be photographed from files and books to a certain extent, provided that this does not conflict with the rights of others. The cost for pupils and students is 5 €/calendar week. The number of photos per week is not limited.
  • If the conservation condition of a book in the library allows it, we can also make photocopies at a price of 0.30 cents/page.
  • Basically: Always ask if something is unclear, friendly and helpful employees are happy to provide advice.
