Pre-study training

Study preparation training (SVA)

The "Study Preparation Program (SVA)" offers particularly intensive preparation for the very demanding entrance examinations of music universities. The SVA includes lessons in an instrumental or vocal major and minor subject, music theory, ear training and ensemble playing. The number of participants in the SVA is limited to 20 students.

  • From when?

    • The minimum age is 14 years.
    • The latest date for admission is usually 2 years before the intended start of studies.
    • The courses for harmony and ear training start at the beginning of each school year and last one year.
There are two weekly courses of 45 minutes each in both subjects.
The lessons are taught by Mr. Dennis Stadtmann.

  • Where?

    • Instrumental and singing lessons at the respective locations of the departments.
    • Music Theory and Aural Training Main Building Blücherplatz
  • Entrance examination, application deadline

    • Admission to the SVA takes place after a consultation with the head of the SVA department and by passing the entrance examination in the main instrumental or vocal subject, which takes place annually before the summer vacation. If necessary, a consultation with the head of department of the respective main subject instrument is also recommended in advance.
    • The performance in the entrance examination should comprise 2 works of different styles and last 7 - 10 minutes. Depending on their age, students with the study objective "school music" must also audition and play the piano.
    • Students are accepted if they intend to study music and have the talent, aptitude and performance to successfully complete the SVA.
    • The next entrance examination will take place on Tuesday, 8.7.2025, at 12:15 in the Chamber Music Hall.
  • Course of the training

    • Admitted students are obliged to take part regularly in major and minor subject, music theory and aural training lessons as well as ensemble playing, if applicable.
    • Graduates must take an annual intermediate examination in all subjects, in which their performance is assessed. Each examination is taken and assessed by an examination board consisting of the head of the SVA department and teachers from the relevant subject area.
    • The examination program should meet the requirements of "Jugend musiziert" in the main subject. Three works of different styles must be performed (total length approx. 15 minutes). As many universities expressly require it, playing by heart is desirable.
    • In the minor subject, 2 works of different styles with an appropriate level of difficulty are expected. The duration of the performance should not exceed 5 minutes.
    • Shortly before the examination date, a written test with aural training and music theory sections is written as part of the theory lessons.
    • No marks are awarded for any of the examinations. Students receive a counseling session following the exam.
