The oboe is the oldest double-reed instrument. Its sound is produced by two reed-like reeds vibrating against each other when blown. According to the old masters, the oboe has the closest resemblance to the human voice.
Literature for oboe can be found in every musical epoch since the Baroque era. The oboe also has its place in pop and film music.
Composers such as J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel used the oboe as a solo instrument in many of their works.
As a soloist, in chamber music with piano, in a symphony orchestra - there are (almost) no limits to the oboe's many possibilities. Oboists are particularly welcome in orchestras, as the instrument is rarely played.
