The sound of the bassoon is balanced and calmly beautiful and resembles the human baritone voice. With its three and a half octave range, the bassoon sounds full and powerful, especially in the lower register, and somewhat plaintive and melancholy in the upper register. One of the bassoon's main characteristics is its ability to blend well with almost all other instruments.
The bassoon has been used in all musical eras since the Baroque period, especially in orchestras in the bass section, in many chamber music ensembles in classical music and in popular music.
