Water maintenance of dams and ponds

The Water Maintenance Department of the Lower Water Authority of the City of Aachen is responsible for the maintenance of dams and ponds where the bed is connected to the natural groundwater table. In addition to a few smaller ponds, these are mainly the Diepenbenden dam, the Kupferbach dam, the Westparkweiher pond, the Hangeweiher pond, the ponds in Höfchenspark, the pond in the Walheim leisure area and the ponds in Schönau Castle Park. As the water maintenance department of the City of Aachen does not have its own fleet of vehicles and operating personnel available for maintenance, the tasks are carried out on behalf of the City of Aachen by Regionetz GmbH.

In addition, around 150 other ponds and public fountains are owned by the city. The respective maintenance has been assigned to individual departments of the City of Aachen. Ponds in the forest are maintained by the Environment - Forestry Department. Ponds that have been classified as biotopes under nature conservation law are maintained by the Environment Department - Maintenance Department of the Lower Nature Conservation Authority. Ponds located on public green spaces are supervised by the Environment Department - Green Planning. Ponds that have no connection to groundwater (e.g. Europaplatz) are classified as fountains and are therefore supervised by the fountain department of the City of Aachen's building management.
