Drinking water supply is a central task of municipal services of general interest. The safe and sustainable supply of high-quality drinking water to Aachen's population is therefore one of the most important public tasks.
Around a fifth of Aachen's water comes from groundwater works operated by Stadtwerke Aachen AG (STAWAG) in the city of Aachen. The rest comes from the subsidiary WAG (Wassergewinnungs- und -aufbereitungsgesellschaft Nordeifel mbH). WAG uses the water from the Dreilägerbachtalsperre and Kalltalsperre dams and the Obersee Rurtalsperre dam and treats it in the Roetgen and Wehebachtalsperre drinking water treatment plants. In the southern urban area of Aachen, groundwater is extracted from the water-bearing limestone layers in the Eicher Stollen, Brandenburg and Schmithof waterworks and from the fine sand layers near Verlautenheide in the Reichswald waterworks.
You can read the results of STAWAG's regular measurements in the drinking water analysis on the STAWAG homepage. You can also find information on water hardness in Aachen and tips on various water connections and installations.
