From a social planning point of view, the Aachen-Ost / Rothe Erde district with its approx. 23,000 inhabitants is made up of the five living spaces Adalbertsteinweg, Scheibenstraße / Eifelstraße, Panneschopp, Rothe Erde and Drimbornstraße. This is the traditional industrial area of Aachen along the Aachen-Cologne railroad line with the former branch to Luxembourg. Aachen-Ost and Rothe Erde are among those districts in Aachen, not least due to the structural change, in which the opportunity was taken at an early stage to shape the development of the district cooperatively in cooperation with the various institutions in the social sector due to the special challenges. The permanent tasks to be named include the overarching issues of empowerment and equal opportunities, poverty, education and social participation, living and working as well as integration/inclusion, living environment, old age, isolation and encounters, which are intensively addressed by all those involved in neighborhood work, including the neighborhood management. The aim is to improve the living conditions of the residents by involving them in an activating way and with a sensitive view of the respective biographies, local conditions, needs and potential.
District conference
A joint district conference for the East and Rothe Erde areas was founded in March 1996.
The work of the district conference received a remarkable boost when Aachen-Ost and Rothe Erde were included in the funding program "Districts in need of special renewal" Soziale Stadt NRW for the period from December 1999 to the end of 2010. A key component of the program is integrated action, which requires the networking of stakeholders at district level. The program was able to build on the existing cooperation structures in both Aachen-Ost and Rothe Erde. On the other hand, the district conferences expanded their structures in order to take advantage of the opportunities arising from the program over time and to be able to react to changing issues. During the program period, there were two district offices (one in Ost and one in Rothe Erde), which were merged into one district office in the Nadelfabrik at the end of the funding period. The refurbishment and conceptual reorientation of the Nadelfabrik by the City of Aachen is considered one of the flagship projects of the Socially Integrative City program.
District office
To support the work on site, the district conference made intensive efforts to continue a district office and a corresponding position for district management at the City of Aachen after the funding program expired. The office and position were then established on 01.07.2012.
The district office is located in the Nadelfabrik (Reichsweg 30). In May 2019, the district office moved into new premises within the Nadelfabrik and can be found on the first floor in room 005.
