District 5 Burtscheid

Map for district 5 "Burtscheid"

Welcome to the district - or social area - of Burtscheid.

Welcome to the district - or social area - of Burtscheid. We take care of your concerns in Burtscheid, the Frankenberger Viertel and Beverau and more. We want our district to be attractive and liveable for all generations, but especially for older people. That is why we are also involved in shaping some of Burtscheid's committees, such as the district conference.

Burtscheid in figures

As the Burtscheid social area is part of the Aachen-Mitte district, there are no differentiated figures for this. Based on approx. 24,000 residents in Burtscheid (approx. 11,000), Frankenberger Viertel (approx. 9,000) and Beverau (approx. > 4,000), including the 60 - 65 age group (approx. 5%), there are almost 5,000 senior citizens for whom we are committed.

Our tasks and goals

For almost everyone in the team, working on the Seniors' Council was new territory after our election and "taking office" in August 2022. We were therefore grateful that we were able to get involved in existing structures such as neighborhood development and the district conference and were able to plan and hold some 60plus events in cooperation with AWO Burtscheid. We will continue this constructive cooperation.

Details of our work can be found in our 2024 Annual Report from page 20 onwards.

In a closed meeting, the city-wide Seniors' Council defined the main topics for 2024. These are:

  1. Loneliness
  2. Mobility
  3. Living

We will derive the focus of our work in 2023/2024 from these points - in addition to the current topics:

  • Neighborhood care (housing)
  • House splitting (housing)
  • Disabled parking spaces (mobility)
  • Danger to alighting passengers at bus stops from cyclists (mobility)
  • Listening and storytelling benches ("Mulle benches") in parks (solitude)
  • Digital pilots

You can also find out about the work of the Senior Citizens' Council in general and in the district in particular under News.

We have already had some topics on the agenda in previous years. Interim solutions have already been found for some issues, but not everything can be implemented in the short term for a variety of reasons. That is why we are staying on the ball.

Committees

The Senior Citizens' Council is represented by its members in the main committees in Aachen. Brigitte Roth, Erika Monnartz and Reiner Nerlich represent your interests in the following committees:

  • Environment
  • Planning Committee
  • VHS Operating Committee
  • Culture and Theater Committee

The Senior Citizens' Council has a say in the committees, but no voting rights.

Erika Monnartz is also a representative of the Senior Citizens' Council in the "Age and Care" conference at the Aachen city region.

Martin Landrock was elected to the board of the city-wide Senior Citizens' Council as an assessor and coordinated the work of the Senior Citizens' Council's editorial team.

Weekly market

Depending on the weather, we will be at the weekly markets in Burtscheid (Fridays) and the Neumarkt in the Frankenberger Viertel (Saturdays) on the last weekend of each month from May to October. There will also be an altbau plus stand in 2025. If you want to convert your home to make it barrier-free, want to share your home or have questions about subsidies - you can get expert advice here free of charge.

We will inform you here where you can reach us in the period from November 2025 to April 2026. Tell us what you would like us to do.

Mulle banks

We give you our time. We were happy to listen to you every Monday from 15:00 - 16:00 on our waste banks. This pilot was initially limited to the period August - September 2025. We are now evaluating the results, but hope that we have contributed to making the bin banks better known and used in the district.
