Welcome to the district - or social area - of Burtscheid.
We take care of your concerns in Burtscheid, the Frankenberger Viertel and Beverau. We want to make these districts "Fit for 60+" - to paraphrase a goal of the EU Commission. By this we mean that we want to maintain and make our district attractive and liveable for all generations, but especially for older people - as I said, we care.

Burtscheid in figures
As the Burtscheid social area is part of the Aachen-Mitte district, there are no differentiated figures for this. Based on approx. 24,000 residents in Burtscheid (approx. 11,000), Frankenberger Viertel (approx. 9,000) and Beverau (approx. > 4,000), including the 60 - 65 age group (approx. 5%), there are almost 5,000 senior citizens for whom we are committed.

Our tasks and goals
For almost everyone in the team, working on the Seniors' Council was new territory after our election and "taking office" in August 2022. We were therefore grateful that we were able to get involved in existing structures such as neighbourhood development and the district conference and were able to plan and hold a number of 60plus events in cooperation with AWO Burtscheid. We will continue this constructive collaboration in 2024. Details can be found in our annual report, which will be published on the City of Aachen website in the second quarter of 2024.
In a closed meeting, the city-wide Seniors' Council defined the main topics for 2024. These are:
- Loneliness
- Mobility
- Living
We will derive the focal points of our work in 2023/2024 from these points - in addition to all current topics:
- Neighborhood care (housing)
- House splitting (housing)
- Disabled parking spaces (mobility)
- Danger to alighting passengers at bus stops from cyclists (mobility)
- Listening and storytelling benches ("Mulle benches") in parks (solitude)
The specific topics we have initiated and their current status can be found under "News" on the Senior Citizens' Council website.
We continued to pursue the topics from 2023 in 2024. We are also involved in a large number of current issues in Burtscheid and throughout the city. Our goals for 2025 are again derived from city-wide and district-specific topics. And, of course, we will again take on board your feedback as far as we can.
Committees
The Senior Citizens' Council is represented by its members in the main committees in Aachen. Brigitte Roth, Erika Monnartz and Reiner Nerlich represent your interests in the following committees:
- Environment
- Planning Committee
- VHS Operating Committee
- Culture and Theater Committee
The Senior Citizens' Council has a say in the committees, but no voting rights.
Erika Monnartz is also a representative of the Senior Citizens' Council in the "Age and Care" conference at the Aachen city region.
Martin Landrock was elected to the board of the city-wide Senior Citizens' Council as an assessor and coordinated the work of the Senior Citizens' Council's editorial team.
