Tasks of the Senior Citizens' Council
As a voluntary body, the Senior Citizens' Council represents the interests of older citizens vis-à-vis politicians, administration and the public. The Senior Citizens' Council advises and supports the committees in order to improve the quality of life in old age, promotes active participation and independence and works on programs that strengthen togetherness.
The following main tasks arise from the rules of procedure of the Senior Citizens' Council of the City of Aachen:
- Representation of interests: The Senior Citizens' Council represents the interests of the older generation vis-à-vis the council, the administration, charities, senior citizens' facilities and the public.
- Advice and support: It advises and supports the council and administration as well as welfare organizations and senior citizens' facilities.
- Activation and promotion: The Council endeavors to promote the activity and independence of older people and to encourage them to actively participate in all areas of life.
- Collaboration in programs: Participates in the preparation of community tasks and programs for older citizens.
- Appointment of members: The Senior Citizens' Council delegates members with an advisory vote as expert residents to specialist committees of the Council.
Other tasks and responsibilities
The rules of procedure also differentiate the tasks according to the various bodies of the Seniors' Council:
City-wide senior citizens' council
The city-wide Senior Citizens' Council is responsible for the entire city area. It discusses and decides on applications from its members and other residents. Applications worthy of support are forwarded to the Lord Mayor, the Council or other relevant institutions.
District senior citizens' councils
The district senior citizens' councils are responsible for grassroots work in their respective constituencies. They act on their own responsibility according to local circumstances. They have their own right to submit proposals to their respective district council.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors manages the city-wide Senior Citizens' Council. In particular, its tasks include preparing meetings, coordinating the district senior citizens' councils, drawing up basic programs and preparing resolutions.
Executive Board
The Executive Board manages the day-to-day business of the city-wide Senior Citizens' Council. This includes implementing resolutions, managing the budget, deciding on applications and preparing an annual report.
