In its last meeting before the summer break on July 11, 2018, the Aachen City Council unanimously approved the city's new integration concept.
The new concept follows on from the first integration concept adopted by Aachen City Council 12 years ago and was developed in a three-year participatory process.
While the old concept was developed in the light of the new Immigration Act, which had just come into force, from the perspective of promoting and demanding, the new concept formulates ideas and measures from the perspective of an integrative urban society.
The foundation of the new integration concept is laid with the formulation of an "Aachen attitude towards living together in diversity". It describes a fundamental inner attitude with which all citizens of Aachen can meet regardless of their origin. In contrast to racist and exclusionary behavior, the Aachen attitude provides the basis for peaceful coexistence in the city.
The new integration concept describes a total of 107 integration measures in nine fields of action. Many Aachen residents working on a voluntary basis, charities, migrant organizations and other institutions have pooled their knowledge and formulated recommendations for action with great commitment.
The concept is intended to further improve the integration of immigrant minorities and the majority society and pave the way for a culture of recognition in Aachen.
Under the motto "Aachen - that's all of us!", this promotes and strengthens the equal participation of immigrant citizens.
The measures are continuously monitored and evaluated.
