Aachen helps

Many people have made their way across the border in search of protection and safety. The city of Aachen has already taken in a large number of refugees arriving from Ukraine. They receive comprehensive support from the municipal integration managers. Aachen is a safe haven. However, the overload limit has been reached. From now on, the state reception center in Bochum will take over the cases of people arriving in Aachen.

"We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine"

The conviction that Ukraine must be supported is based on the attitude that the attack on Ukraine is also an attack on our fundamental values and the European idea. Mayor Sibylle Keupen explained: "We, here in the border triangle, know from our everyday lives what Europe means. We must do everything in our power to defend these values."

"President Putin's war of aggression is a massive violation of international law and Ukraine's right to self-determination. The people of Ukraine have a democratically elected government, they have chosen their own path independent of Russia. The voice of this people must be respected.

Europe's strength is the community that was built on the ruins of the Second World War. The attack on Ukraine is also an attack on us, on what we believe in wholeheartedly: our fundamental values and the European idea. We, here in the border triangle, know from our everyday lives what Europe means. We must do everything in our power to defend these values ... We are a safe haven. Our doors are open to people fleeing war zones. We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine."

Mayor Sibylle Keupen declared this on Friday, 25.02.2022, one day after the start of the war, at Aachen's market square on the occasion of a solidarity rally for Ukraine. In a broad alliance with the Aachener Friedenspreis e.V., the political parties and the DGB NRW Südwest, the City of Aachen had called for solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Since the morning of February 24, flags of the Mayors for Peace, the EU and Ukraine have been hanging on the façade of the City Hall as a sign of solidarity.

Mayor Sibylle Keupen asks for donations for the people affected

Tens of thousands of people have been affected by the demolition of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine at the beginning of June 2023. Entire villages were destroyed and farmland was flooded. The people affected have to make do without electricity and clean water in the middle of the war in Ukraine. There is also massive environmental damage.

In order to provide the greatest possible help, Mayor Sibylle Keupen draws attention to the Blue-Yellow Cross e.V. donation campaign. The German-Ukrainian association is providing emergency aid and delivering urgently needed relief supplies to the disaster areas - for example medical supplies for hospitals, drinking water filters and purification tablets, power generators, food and hygiene materials. The association, which is also active in Aachen, is appealing for donations.

Anyone wishing to support this initiative can do so via the donation account DE78 3705 0299 0000 4763 46.
