How do I become a member? How long can I borrow media or what happens if I lose my library card?
Visitors without a user card are also welcome.
Where can I get a user card?
You are welcome to visit us during our opening hours and receive your user card directly at the registration desk in the Central Library at Couvenstraße 15, in the district libraries or on the book bus.
Alternatively, you can also have your user ID issued online via the service portal of the City of Aachen. You will need a German bank account and a BundID with which you can access official online services throughout Germany.
What documents do I need to register?
Please bring your identity card or passport together with a confirmation of registration, as we need proof of your current address. Children and young people under the age of 16 need either a valid identity card / passport with a registration certificate and the written consent of a parent or guardian to register. The library card can also be applied for by a parent.
An institution card can be issued for employees of educational institutions, such as schools or kindergartens. This card can be used to borrow items for official use at special lending conditions (8 weeks).
How much does a library card cost?
The tariffs apply from the 18th birthday. Children and young people are exempt from the charges.
Standard rate:
- Adults: 15 € (12 months)
- Persons who work in schools, day-care centers or similar institutions and use the library to fulfill their educational mission: € 0
Reduction:
- Young adults between the ages of 18 and 24, holders of a volunteer pass or an Aachen Pass and people receiving BAföG pay a reduced fee of €8.00.
What payment options do I have?
You can pay in the library in cash or by card. For technical reasons, online payment of the annual fee is only possible from German bank accounts.
How long is my user card valid for?
The user card is valid for 12 months after payment of the fee. After that, the validity must be extended annually by paying the annual fee.
What should I do if I have lost my user ID?
In this case, please contact us. We will block your user card so that no one else can use it. We will issue a replacement card for a fee of € 5 / reduced € 2.50.
How long can I borrow media for?
Please note the different loan periods:
- 28 days of books, sheet music, games, literature CDs
- 14 days Bestsellers, magazines, music CDs, console games, DVDs 7 days.
- max. 21 days of e-media via the eLibrary
You will find the exact return date on the loan receipt.
Can I borrow all the media?
No. Some media cannot be borrowed:
- the latest issue of the magazines
- Daily and weekly newspapers
- Books that are part of the library's information stock
Can I reserve media?
You are welcome to reserve borrowed media in our media catalog. Or talk to the staff. We will be happy to help you!
We charge €1.00 per item for the reservation. We will inform you by post or e-mail as soon as the medium is ready for you.
Can I extend the loan period?
Yes, the loan period can be extended twice, unless the validity of the user card has expired, charges are outstanding or a medium has been reserved by another person.

What can I do if I have missed the deadline for returning media?
You can print out a receipt with the return date for each loan. If you have exceeded the return date, you will be charged a fee - even if you have not received a written reminder.

You can renew online via your reader account, by telephone, via the service portal of the City of Aachen or in person at the library.We will automatically remind you of the return deadline three days before the end of the respective loan period. If you do not wish to return the media yet, you are welcome to renew them.
What should I do if I have lost a medium or it is damaged?
In this case, it must be replaced with a new copy. Please contact the staff for this.
