School route assistants wanted

We are always looking for committed and reliable people to join our team in Aachen's elementary school!

The way to school - a daily risk

Starting school is an important milestone for first-graders. For the first time, they are walking alone along a busy road or crossing a junction, crosswalk or traffic light. All of this can quickly overwhelm children. Statistics show that walking to school can be dangerous, especially as children are not yet able to judge traffic properly and can be easily distracted.

Safety through school travel services

In order to give the children a bit of safety on their daily way to school, volunteer school route helpers are deployed throughout the city, who accompany the children safely across the streets with their yellow warning clothing and a trowel. These volunteers are our "yellow angels". They help the children on their way to school and explain the traffic rules to them.

Recognition for your commitment

For your work, you will receive an allowance of ten euros per month from the City of Aachen for each weekly period of work. For example, if you take on the school crossing patrol every weekday before school starts, you will receive 50 euros per month. If you are also on duty as a guide every lunchtime after school, the monthly lump sum is 100 euros. And not to forget: You can be sure of the thanks of parents, school caretakers and school administrators and many friendly children's faces every day!

Your insurance cover

As part of your voluntary work, you are covered by liability insurance through the insurer of the City of Aachen and accident insurance with Unfallkasse NRW.

How you are deployed

The usual times are in the morning before school starts and at lunchtime after school finishes - about half an hour in each case. A location can also be supervised by several volunteers, who divide the days and/or times between them. You will help schoolchildren cross the road at traffic lights, crosswalks or traffic helper crossings. If possible, we will assign you to a school near you.

What you should bring with you

Any adult can help with the school travel service. They are often parents or relatives of schoolchildren. They have to reliably get up early, get to school and stand outside in all weathers. Even under stress or in difficult situations, they should always keep calm and maintain an overview.
