Potential analysis

The potential analysis is a necessary part of the career orientation process for young people. In this process, young people examine their interests, ideas, self-image and strengths. In order to support the adolescents on this path, they need educational tools that also reveal their "hidden" skills.

The term competence refers to the ability to cope with a situation or challenge independently. However, this ability can only be observed and cannot be measured, which is why situations must be simulated or action-oriented tasks set in a competence assessment, which are observed according to certain predetermined criteria.

The potential analysis is one of the first building blocks of career guidance and can be carried out in year 7 or 8. At this early stage, the focus is on discovering the potential, interests and so-called key competencies of the young people rather than their vocational skills or readiness for training.

Action-oriented procedures are of central importance for the target group in question, as they can be used in both specialist and general problem and decision-making situations. Elements of an assessment center are used for this purpose. They form the core of the potential analysis.

The following potentials or key competencies are identified:

  • Personal skills, e.g. self-confidence, motivation / willingness to perform, concentration, punctuality
  • Methodological skills, e.g. work organization, problem-solving skills, diligence
  • Social skills, e.g. ability to work in a team, ability to communicate, criticize and deal with conflict

When using exercises according to hamet 2 (Berufsbildungswerk Waiblingen), basic vocational skills such as the use of tools and fine motor skills can also be observed, but are not the focus of a potential analysis.

In the feedback meeting, participants receive a certificate that includes the key qualifications from the Career Choice Passport plus and a support recommendation. This document can be added to the career choice passport. In addition, the results of the potential analysis are included in the assessment and support planning carried out with the career entry mentor.
