The town twinning was officially established in Aachen on October 25, 1986. The origin of this town twinning is the friendly relationship between Aachen University of Applied Sciences and Ningbo University of Applied Sciences, which has existed since 1984. In 1985, the city of Ningbo expressed its wish to establish a twinning relationship with the city of Aachen. As the City Council of Aachen had long intended to twinned with a city in the east, the request was granted.
