Naumburg - Saxony-Anhalt

The official twinning document was signed in Aachen on May 30, 1988. Since 1985, the Aachen City Council had been trying to establish a town twinning with a municipality in the former GDR. Through the mediation of Aachen art collector Prof. Peter Ludwig, who brought his personal acquaintance with General Secretary Erich Honecker into the exploratory process, a connection was established with the city of Naumburg. The exchange was initially limited to official meetings without the participation of citizens.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 gave the partnership new impetus. The partnership agreement was amended in January 1990. Initially, the German-German partnership required development assistance. For example, the city of Aachen supported the Naumburgers expertly and financially in setting up a new administration. Aachen companies and groups became involved in the twin town in a variety of ways. The relationship between the two cities is now characterized by intensive and cordial contacts between citizens. The numerous personal and cultural encounters help to gradually break down the "wall in people's minds" that still exists in some places.
