The Charlemagne border region is an association of the bordering municipalities and regional authorities of the City of Aachen, StädteRegion Aachen, the German-speaking Community of Belgium, the Parkstad Limburg, the Gemeente Heerlen and the Gemeente Vaals.
Its objectives are to promote the economic development of the common area, facilitate cross-border working and living and improve coordination on planning and developments in the region.
The Charlemagne board has defined the working areas of the labor market, economy and infrastructure/mobility as the framework for cross-border cooperation.
Various existing projects and collaborations have been continued and new ones established along these thematic lines in recent years.
The focus is on the following topics:
- Promotion and development of the cross-border economy, infrastructure and permeability of the labor markets
- Cross-border retail, transportation and event calendar
- Positioning within Europe and European networks
- Joint development plan as the basis for the region's future prospects
- Monthly meeting Representatives of all working groups to plan projects, events, conferences and congresses
The management of the consortium is located at the Economic Development Department of the City of Aachen and Parkstad Limburg.
