Declaration on accessibility

As a public body within the meaning of Directive (EU) 2016/2102, the City of Aachen endeavors to make its websites and mobile applications accessible in accordance with the provisions of the Disability Equality Act (BGG NRW) and the Accessible Information Technology Ordinance NRW (BITV NRW) for the implementation of Directive (EU) 2016/2102. This declaration on accessibility applies to the website of the City of Aachen www.aachen.de. When designing the website, particular attention was paid to barrier-free programming.

Status of the website's compliance with the requirements for accessible information technology

Nevertheless, this website is not yet fully compatible with the requirements for barrier-free information technology. We are working on improving the accessibility of the site. However, we ask for your patience.

The review of compliance with the requirements is based on an assessment carried out by the Competence Center for Accessible IT (KBIT) at IT.NRW in the period from 10.04.2025 to 17.04.2025 based on the test steps of the WCAG test procedure.

The following requirements were recognized as partially compliant:

  • Only information-bearing graphics or images must be provided with a descriptive alternative text.
  • Components with a text field and the "More" button are not read out by the screen reader.
  • External links are not marked in the link boxes.
  • The entire URL is sometimes read out in the link boxes.
  • Due to the complexity of a modern website, a correct heading hierarchy cannot be achieved in all circumstances, e.g. also in the contact tiles.
  • The number of hits found during the search is read out several times by a screen reader in the status display.
  • Videos need a media alternative.
  • PDF documents are not yet barrier-free.
  • Sign language videos are currently being commissioned.
